SINGING

Singing is the primary function of the human voice and one of the most natural expressions of the human condition. Even people, who believe that carrying a tune in a basket is beyond their ability, will be heard quietly humming or singing when they think that there might not be another person present. Those who consciously enjoy singing find themselves in church choirs, community chorals, barbershop quartets, professional choral societies, open mike night at the karaoke bar and on up to front and center on stage in rock, pop, religious, operatic, musical theater, folk and jazz venues.

We all bring to singing a vocal instrument of varying natural ability. The call, "Inside voice, please!" and other factors affect our speech patterns as we mature, including but not limited to whining, crying, yelling (in cheering or anger), whispering and a few psychological influences like apprehension and self-consciousness. Our speech patterns build habits into the coordination of the vocal apparatus, which can inhibit balance when we want to sing, hence that varying natural ability mentioned above. In addition, voices always reflect the physical, psychological and emotional state of their owners in any given moment, so even a completely natural voice might sound constricted under stress.

Most vocal pedagogy steers clear of physiological understanding of the voice, concentrating instead on a few frequently misunderstood or actually erroneous maxims regarding breathing, the sensations of resonance and a most insidious culprit, �support�.

Benny Goodman used the same clarinet for swing and for Mozart; Wynton Marsalis uses the same trumpet for jazz and classical music. The human voice is governed physiologically by laws of nature. When trained properly, balanced, made flexible and strong, it responds to the will to produce whatever tone is demanded by the musical style. In other words, the coordination of the various physical elements of the voice is the same whether singing rock, pop, folk, theatrical, operatic or jazz...whatever...it's the concept of tone, the mind, that then plays the well trained instrument.

The Old Italian School of singing, generally regarded as the source of Bel Canto (which means beautiful singing), studied the sensations of natural singers and the physiology of the throat, head and thorax as it relates to muscles throughout the body in order to understand the relationship between actions and the sensations, which they engender. The result was the creation of singers whose technique followed the laws of nature, a coordination, which appeared, because it was, perfectly natural. The study of singing should encompass the physical development of the vocal instrument with its complex of some sixty muscles and the coordination of their balanced movements within the entire body�s framework, with the goal of gaining control of all elements of the person, that the effort of singing may then be turned over to the mind where nature will work its wonders and the tuned voice will respond accurately to the imagination.
